Coach Shawn Kurulak

Colorado Rampage Hockey is proud to announce that Shawn Kurulak will be joining the Rampage Coaching staff.  Coach Kurulak will be serve as the Head Coach for the Rampage U14 Tier 1 team and the PeeWee AA team, as well as serve as the PeeWee Age Group Coordinator.  Shawn brings a wealth of experience as a coach and as a player to the club.

A native of Calgary, Alberta, Shawn was a four year letter winner with the DU Pioneers as a defenseman, and wore the alternate captain's "A" for three seasons with the Pioneers.  Shawn was also a three time WCHA All-Academic selection and helped the Pioneers win the WCHA league championship in his senior year. In his 131 career collegiate games, Shawn had 41 points (7 goals, 34 assists) and 268 penalty minutes. Kurulak also won a spot on the WCHA all-star squad that traveled to Switzerland for an international tournament in the summer of 1998.

After his college playing career, Shawn spent many years coaching at the collegiate level.  He spent three years as an Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator at RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) of the ECAC Conference for the 2006-09 seasons.  Before RPI, Shawn was an Assistant Coach at West Point for 2004-06, where he was responsible for recruiting and player development.  Before his time Army's Black Knights, Shawn was an Assistant Coach at Bemidji State University for the 2001-03 seasons and he also was the Head Coach of the Fargo-Moorhead Junior A team that finished 2nd in the North American Hockey League for the 2003-04 season.  He returned to Colorado for the 2010 season, where he was Head Coach of the Colorado Thunderbirds U18 AAA Hockey Club, guiding the team to the 2010 Midget National Tournament, winning the State and Regional tournaments to get there.  Most recently, Shawn served as Hockey Director for the Hyland Hills Hockey Association for the past 4 seasons, as well as head Coach for the Squirt A and Midget Major AA programs.

"I am excited to join a growing club like the Rampage and be part of a strong and energized group of coaches with a shared passion for the game, coaching and working to develop young athletes" stated Coach Kurulak upon being offered the position with the Rampage.  "Coach Sherman and I have stayed in touch and connected over the years pursuing this great game.  He guided me well when I left college and shared great advice on hockey and my future.  I've trusted Andrew, and am excited now to work with him and the Rampage staff.  I am looking forward to helping many athletes reach their athletic potential".    Shawn's history with Coach Andrew Sherman goes back to his graduating year from DU, with Coach Sherman serving as a Player Representative for Shawn as he looked to continue his playing career after college.  Unfortunately, injuries sidelined Shawn, but fortunately for many young athletes, he put his knowledge and experience to good use as he turned to coaching.

Rampage President of Hockey Operations and U16 AAA Head Coach, Pat Bingham shared his enthusiasm for adding Shawn to the Rampage staff, "Shawn's passion and experience in developing young hockey players to help reach their full potential is impressive. We are extremely fortunate to add such a quality coach to the Rampage program and a mentor to our athletes and coaches.  Another great opportunity to continue to build the solid foundation necessary for our program's growth and success, and Shawn will be a big part of that.  The addition of Shawn to our coaching staff shows our continued commitment to assembling the best coaching staff in the state of Colorado".

Coach Kurulak has also served in numerous volunteer roles through his hockey career including working at the USA Hockey Rocky Mountain District Development Camps, numerous international and local area camps, prospects programs and as a Assistant Video Coach with the Colorado Avalanche.  He is a self-professed student of the game and always looking to learn more and pass on what he can on.

"I am excited to pass on and give to the Rampage program so much of what was given to me as a player and through my experiences as a coach over the years.  I look forward to working with the athletes at all levels and to help with the Rampage vision in building stronger Rampage teams and program for all levels of athletes.  There are primed and numerous opportunities for the club to keep the talented young athletes at home here in the Monument/Colorado Springs area and along the corridor south of Denver.  It is going to be an exciting time to be part of a growing and visionary program" commented Shawn.

Shawn graduated from DU with a BSBA degree in Finance and Marketing and is a USA Hockey Level IV certified coach.  He is married to DU Hall of Fame soccer star and athletically decorated wife DeShaunne, and has two children, 16 year old son, Kaylan and 6 year old daughter, Payton.

Please extend a warm welcome to Coach Shawn and his family to the Rampage family.
