KEARNEY, Neb. – Making it official on Thursday afternoon, Tri-City Storm forward Darik Angeli will play his college hockey with the Ohio State University Buckeyes beginning next Fall.
 
Angeli, who will join fellow Storm teammate Matt Johnson at Ohio State, has nine goals, 11 assists and 50 penalty minutes in 42 games this season. However, he believes that his game will only get better going to college over the next few years.
 
“I feel that the Ohio State coaching staff will push me to my highest and fullest potential in hockey during my college career, and it seemed like a good overall fit for me,” said Angeli, who is a native of Lakewood, Colo. “Ohio State has a great history in sports, and the hockey program has a winning attitude like the rest of the athletic program.”
 
Ohio State is a NCAA Division I college hockey program located in Columbus and competes in the CCHA hockey conference with the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Miami (Ohio).
 
“Darik has worked hard for two years in our league to earn a scholarship to a high-end program, and we believe he has earned it,” said Head Coach/General Manager Drew Schoneck. “We couldn’t be happier for him, and congratulate him on his commitment to play for the Buckeyes.”
 
The 19-year old, who is 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, was traded to the Storm from Chicago five games into the regular season and scored two goals in his Storm debut against Lincoln. Nonetheless, he feels better now to have his commitment finalized and ready to finish strong this season.
 
“It feels like a 747 (airplane) is off my back, and I can focus on being a leader for this team,” Angeli said. “I want to end my junior career the right way and make it memorable before heading to school next season.”
 
Angeli says that he plans on majoring in business while attending classes at Ohio State.
 
With Angeli’s commitment, Tri-City currently has 12 players who are committed to NCAA Division I schools. Alex Carpenter (Western Michigan University), Simon Denis (Ferris State Univ.), Cole Gunner (Air Force Academy), Bill Eiserman (UMASS-Lowell), Matt Johnson (Ohio State Univ), Dan Kolomatis (Merrimack College), Cody Murphy (Miami University-Ohio), Rick Pinkston (Dartmouth College), Zack Rall (Univ. of Alaska-Anchorage), Brad Schierhorn (Dartmouth College) and Brian Ward (Dartmouth College).
 
The Storm begin a season long seven-game home stand Friday night against the Sioux City Musketeers at the Viaero Event Center.
